No, ‘Alien: Covenant’ doesn’t star Ripley…

A new poster for ‘Alien: Covenant’ gives us another terrifying glimpse at the iconic xenomorph… and it looks as though it’s on the prowl. Clutching her favourite space rifle as she hides from the slathering alien, Daniels (played by Katherine Waterston) is definitely channelling the Ellen Ripley look.

And let’s face it – she could easily fit in aboard the Nostromo.

Kinda cool, but not exactly inspired.

Not bad, and it’s clearly intended to remind us that this is an ‘Alien’ movie following the ‘mixed’ critical responses to ‘Prometheus’. Still, it’s a good effort, even if it is a little bit uninspired. And it leaves us wondering what’s in store for the plucky Daniels.

Of course, it’s just the latest ‘Alien: Covenant’ poster to hit our screens.

Earlier efforts include the rather awesome HR Giger inspired piece which set the internet ablaze when it appeared on Twitter. And for good reason – it’s absolutely stunning.

Still, the new poster certainly points us towards some pretty tense scenes… and with a trio of new TV spots revealed last night, it’s starting to look as though ‘Alien: Covenant’ is going to take the franchise back to its roots.

The first spot, ‘Run’ gives us an overview of the film’s plot, in which a group of intrepid explorers set off aboard the Covenant space ship in an attempt to colonise a distant planet. Except, it doesn’t quite go according to plan.

The second spot, ‘Hide’ shows the crew exploring their strange new world (complete with ‘Prometheus’-inspired stone heads) as they slowly begin to realise that they’re not alone.

Finally, the last spot, ‘Pray’ shows us the fall-out of their botched mission. Returning to their own ship, they’re left fighting for their lives as it becomes infested with the predatory aliens we know and love. I’m not holding out much hope for them, to be honest.

Essentially, the vibe we’re getting here is that ‘Alien: Covenant’ is tapping into its survival-horror roots, channelling the earlier films to create a worthy successor. Will it turn out better than ‘Prometheus’? Almost certainly…

But will it be as good as the earlier ‘Alien’ films?

We’ll have to wait and see.

‘Alien: Covenant’ stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Callie Hernandez, Carmen Ejogo, Guy Pearce and Noomi Rapace.

Ridley Scott directs, based on a script by John Logan, Jack Paglen, Michael Green , and Dante Harper.

‘Alien: Covenant’ heads to cinemas on 19 May 2017.
