New Alien movie confirms official title

The official title of Disney's upcoming Alien movie has been confirmed.

The company's Q1 2024 earnings call with CEO Bob Iger saw plenty of exciting news, including Moana 2's shock announcement as well as release window insight for Frozen 3, Toy Story 5, and new Star Wars flick The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The Disney boss also finally revealed the title of the latest film in the Alien franchise - Alien: Romulus - which will be released on August 16.

Directed by Fede Álvarez, the creator behind 2010's Evil Dead and 2022's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the film will star Priscilla's Cailee Spaeny, Madame Web star Isabela Merced, and Industry actor David Jonsson.

Shadow and Bone's Archie Renaux, Aftersun star Spike Fearn, and Closing Doors and Skin actor Aileen Wu are also set to star.

Original Alien creator Ridley Scott will produce the film alongside Michael Pruss in the 20th Century Fox production which will be set between the events of 1979's Alien, and the 1986 sequel Aliens.

Speaking to Variety, Spaeny revealed: "It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie. They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours.

"So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible."

Additionally, the Pacific Rim star addressed returning to the world of sci-fi, saying she has "so much fun" in the genre.

She continued: "I like trying to do as many different things as I can. So I swapped my high heels and my beehive for spacesuits and lots of wire work. … I love watching those old ‘70s, ‘80s action sci-fi films. And I’m such a fan of that IP and Sigourney Weaver. It’s legendary to get to be a part of it.”

Alien: Romulus will be released on August 16.
