Alien: Romulus looks set to be the franchise's most terrifying entry yet, featuring scenes that have the potential to "scar" some viewers "for life".

The upcoming film, directed by Fede Álvarez, follows a group of young space colonisers who come face-to-face with the Xenomorphs.

Ahead of Romulus' release next month, its cast have teased some terrifying scares that will stick with viewers long after leaving the cinema.

"I really do believe that there are specific sequences in this film that will scar some kids that sneak into the movie for life," Madame Web's Isabela Merced shared during a new interview with Total Film.

"You can definitely say goodbye to a 12A," David Jonsson added. "The halfway house with Fede is just not his style. If you're going to try and scare people, then you scare them."

Priscilla's Cailee Spaeny also weighed in and referenced Álvarez's Evil Dead reimagining, saying: "He doesn't know how to not put that spin on it. That is just his instinct. He's waiting to do something strange and twisted.

"And you know he's got it when you're right on the edge of going: 'Should we do this?' That's when you know: 'OK, Fede is in his sweet spot.'"

Romulus, which also stars Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu, will take place between the events of the first two Alien movies.

Álvarez recently opened up about Romulus' place in the franchise's chronology, explaining: "It was mostly something that made sense for a premise, that it needed to take place a few years after the first one.

"I don't know why I keep hearing that, maybe because I said it, that it takes place between 1 and 2. It's true, but I see it more as it takes place after 1, which means the same... It's kind of the child of both movies combined visually, aesthetically and story-wise."

Alien: Romulus is released in cinemas on August 16.
