Alita: Battle Angel's Rosa Salazar has shared her enthusiasm for portraying the titular cyborg warrior until her "last breath".

Released earlier this year, the techno sci-fi epic featured two double Oscar winners – Christoph Waltz and Mahershala Ali – but they couldn't save it from a somewhat underwhelming box office reception.

So would 20th Century Fox even be interested in making Salazar's wish come true?

Chatting to Slash Film, the actress admitted: "I would play Alita 'til my last breath. I would, and thanks to the performance capture technology, I probably could."

Sadly, she's not heard anything from the studio to suggest that a sequel will go ahead, but urged fans to "buy those Blu-rays" in hope of inspiring 20th Century Fox to realise there's life in this unique franchise.

Salazar also recognises that the studio's humongous merger with Disney might play a part in its lack of Alita sequel interest – as it's obviously pretty damn busy these days.

"People are gaining jobs, people are losing jobs," she said. "The whole Disney/Fox acquisition is so involved, this isn't the right time for me to call Alan Horn [chief creative officer at Disney] and be like, 'Hey bro, I know you got a 'lotta stuff going on, but like, what about Alita 2?'"

Maybe James Cameron should just bulldoze into the studio and demand a sequel? The fans want it, and you'd imagine they'd listen to him.

Alita: Battle Angel is available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray.
