Alita: Battle Angel's Robert Rodriguez is hopeful there will be a sequel

Alita: Battle Angel director Robert Rodriguez is hoping to butter up Disney enough for the studio to greenlight a sequel.

Released in 2019 to middling reviews and underwhelming box office numbers – it made just over $400m with a reported break-even point of $350-500 million – this cyberpunk actioner featured Rosa Salazar in the title role alongside Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connolly and Mahershala Ali.

"I'm hoping I'm earning some points by doing so much for Disney, 'cause they own it now [after buying Fox] and that's why we weren't able to jump right into the sequel, because of that whole thing," Rodriguez recently told The Nerdy Basement.

"I'm trying to see what happens with [The Book of] Boba Fett. I think that's going to knock people's socks off so when that happens I will go in and say: 'OK, I've been here for a while, let's figure out how we can do Alita whether it's for streaming or theatrical because it's such a great property, people love it. I love it and Jim [Cameron, co-producer] loves it.'"

He went on to reveal: "We just talked about it recently again, about how can we do this, what's the best way to approach it. I think it'll be me going in there with him to talk about it because I'm doing a lot of stuff for [Disney] now."

It's important to remember, though, that Cameron himself is extremely busy at the moment, with four Avatar sequels bubbling away under his directorial watch, so we'll have to wait and see how Disney responds to Rodriguez's hopes.

Rodriguez is one of the executive producers behind upcoming Star Wars spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett, set to premiere in December 2021.
