Sherlock star Amanda Abbington has revealed how her split from co-star Martin Freeman is helping her with her new play.

The actress, who was with The Hobbit actor for 16 years and shares two children with him, spoke on Good Morning Britain about her new play, The Son.

'I'm playing a mum going through a divorce with a depressed child,' she told Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway.

'Life and my age now, you always draw on your past experiences. There was points in the play where I remembered my past, but I do think actors do that.

'It is about a break up, I've been through a break up. It's about a teenage boy, I have a teenage boy, all these things factor in to it and make it in to a more emotional piece.'

Speaking about her life now, Amanda added: 'I never like to say I'm too happy because then it gets scuppered. I'm lucky that I have a job that I love and I have two kids and I have a lovely life personally so I feel very lucky but then I'm going to say, it all could change.'

The actress, 45, also admitted she's been banned from Twitter on three separate occasions.

'I should get a badge of honour,' she said. 'I get quite outspoken about things and people don't like it so they report me.

'Trophy hunting, women's rights but mainly about animals. I send [my tweets] to my friend and go "Is that alright?" and they go, "Please, god, don’t send that".

'The ones I send that I've got banned for, they are nothing like the ones I've shown to my friends. They go, "You can’t do that, you can’t say that".'

Good Morning Britain is on weekdays on ITV.
