Amazing Fan Theory About Suicide Squad’s The Joker

image

We’ve seen many film theories come and go over the years, but now DC fans are looking at Jared Leto’s depiction of the iconic Joker in ‘Suicide Squad’ and applying a theory of their own.

Be advised - the following contains DC Universe and possible ‘Suicide Squad’ spoilers.

Since the release of the trailer at Comic-Con, one fan has suggested that the Joker isn’t who we all think he is (which is actually a theory that’s circulated in the past). Reddit user Jason-G169 believes that the sadistic villain we are seeing is none other than Jason Todd - the incarnation of Batman’s sidekick Robin who took over when Dick Grayson flew the nest (pun intended) to become Nightwing.

Now this is where it gets a bit complicated, because the theory refers back to the story arcs in the comics (as touched upon further by Dorkly.com) whereby Todd’s foolish and rash nature catches up with him when he meets his bloody demise at the hands of the Joker (and a forceful crowbar).

Subsequently, Todd resurrected (as comic book character tend to) decades later under the guise of Red Hood - a masked criminal who, after falling into a vat of acid after being pursued by Batman, went on to transform into the Joker.

Todd assumed the identity of Red Hood upon his resurrection years later, so this is one possible reason why he’d now become the Joker - he has a history of assuming the Joker’s identity.

But there’s more, as the trailer for ‘Suicide Squad’ contains a number of significant moments that support this idea.

Read All About It

Firstly, there’s a newspaper with the headline ‘WAYNE TOWER DEVASTATED’, with a scribbled ‘YOU LET YOUR FAMILY DIE’ over it. This could reference Bruce Wayne’s loss of his parents but also connect to the loss of Jason Todd, as he was considered family. It could simply mean that Wayne let Todd die at the hands of the Joker. What’s more, the message references the storyline of ‘A Death in the Family’ comic which is the one where Todd meets his end.

Suits You, Sir

Secondly, the message we see on the now retired Robin suit reads ‘HAHAHA Joke’s on you BATMAN’, which is kinda odd. Is the Joker killing Robin classed as the ‘joke’? More suitably, it could mean that because his former sidekick is now the Joker, that is the ultimate joke at Batman’s expense - being killed by the Joker has transformed Todd into the next incarnation. (You’re doing well if you’re keeping up, by the way.)

Note: the above and below images are linked with the words ‘HAHAHA’. Whether this is seer coincidence or the Joker mocking Batman as he grieves for Robin (above), or if, indeed, there’s something more sinister at play with the tattoos he sports (below) is another matter entirely.

Work Of Art

Thirdly, the image of the Joker we’ve seen - a high-res shot of Leto in full makeup and tats - holds some clues.

As many have noted, it’s hard to believe that this insane criminal mastermind has sat in a tattoo parlour for tens of hours to have various showy-off designs inked all over him. It all feels like a contrived and well thought out style choice, meaning Todd’s decision to embrace and become the Joker was a meticulously executed plan, because that would legitimise the desire to have these tattoos so carefully etched onto his body.

Furthermore, if we look closely at what some of the tattoos are of, it’s clear that the one on his right bicep is of a feather - a Robin’s feather, perhaps? There’s also a small ‘J’ on the left cheek - rather than stating the obvious and believing it stands for Joker, it could stand for Jason. The shape of it - a sort of knife blade outline - could also be a reminder that Jason is metaphorically stabbing Batman in the back after turning from loyal sidekick to archenemy.
