18 amazing movie scenes that were only in the trailer

Trailers for ‘Rogue One’ featured a number of scenes that didn’t make into the final film including a Darth Vader scene that may never see the light of day.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen something cool-looking in a trailer that didn’t make it into the final film, in fact it’s quite a common occurrence.

In some cases, footage is shot just for the teaser trailer, and the director has no intention whatsoever of including it in the final film. In others entire scenes get cut from the picture later into the editing process after the trailer is released.

Here are some of the most awesome movie scenes you’ll only ever see in the trailer.

‘Iron Man 2’

In the film’s trailer we see Pepper kissing Tony’s Iron Man helmet (steady on) before she chucks it out of the back of a plane. Tony jumps out after in shouting “You complete me.”

This scene appears in the final film (watch the clip), but without Pepper. The romance between the two is actually unrequited in the film until the final scene.

‘Batman Returns’

In a number of trailers for Tim Burton’s sequel Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman can be seen laughing away on a bed in the Penguin’s office. This particular shot never appeared in the final film, which is a shame as it’s delightfully crackers. Watch it here.

‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’

When you think of how time-consuming this film must been to shoot and animate, it’s amazing any scenes were cut, but the first trailer revealed a scene where Bob Hoskins’ Eddie Valiant wearing an animated pig head. The cut scene can be seen in full on the DVD extras.

‘Predators’

This pay off shot from the first trailer for Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Predators’ saw Adrien Brody’s Royce being targeted by dozens of Predators. “COOL!” everyone thought.

In the final film, only three are hunting him. Not so cool.

‘Terminator 2’

Here’s an example of a teaser trailer (watch it above) that features zero footage from the final film. It shows a Terminator endoskeleton being built from scratch before the living flesh of Arnold Schwarzenegger is added. It reveals nothing of the film’s plot aside from Arnie’s perfectly sculpted abs.

‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’

The first full trailer for ‘Empire’ features an absolutely barmy Harrison Ford voiceover and this shot of Threepio ripping a decal from a door on Hoth. It’s actually part of a deleted subplot that sees the protocol droid leading some Stormtroopers in to a wampa containment unit.

‘The Three Stooges’

We’d imagine quite a few curious gentleman were tempted into the cinema to see this execrable ‘Stooges’ reboot on the strength of this trailer scene alone.

The scene, which saw supermodel Kate Upton emerge from a pool in a nun bikini, was cut entirely from the final film, possibly after complaints from The American Catholic League who called the scene “blasphemous”. Watch it here.

‘Iron Man 3’

Many of the film’s early trailers featured an ominous voiceover from Ben Kingsley’s supervillain Mandarin. He can be heard saying, “Mr. Stark… today is the first day of what’s left of your life.”

Pretty scary huh? He never actually says it in the film.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

The first trailer for Marc Webb’s Spidey-sequel featured a scene of Harry Osborn telling Peter Parker that Oscorp has him under surveillance which isn’t in the finished film. “Why?” asks Andrew Garfield’s Peter. “Isn’t that the question of day?” replies Dane DeHaan’s Harry.

‘Back To The Future’

Here’s another teaser trailer made up of footage shot specifically for an ad - watch it above. Michael J Fox’s Marty McFly powers up the DeLorean’s Flux Capacitor, puts on some natty mirrored shades before a mystery woman taps on the car window to ask “How far are you going?”

“About thirty years,” he replies, cool as a cucumber.

‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’

Anna Paquin’s Rogue was cut from Bryan Singer’s X-Men sequel fairly late in the day, but this shot of Magneto and Bobby Drake rescuing her made it in to the early trailers. Her scenes will be restored for the extended Rogue cut of the film, coming to DVD and Blu-ray next year.

‘Star Trek’

If like us you were confused as to why JJ Abrams cast Winona Ryder as Spock’s aged mother in his 2009 reboot, this shot in the trailer could help. It shows Ryder without ageing makeup, possibly holding an infant Spock, in what we can only presume is a flashback. It only appeared in the trailer, but it hints that a bigger part for the underused Winona was cut.

‘Quantum of Solace’

Much of the pre-release marketing of Daniel Craig’s second Bond film utilised this iconic shot of Bond walking through a desert holding a machine gun. It was shot specifically for the early trailers and posters, but never in the finished movie.

‘The Transporter’

Seeing Jason Statham’s Frank Martin deflect an RPG using a tea tray in the trailer is so sublime, you have to ask why it was cut from the final film? Madness.

‘Paranormal Activity 3’

This teaser trailer for the third ‘Paranormal Activity’ saw two young girls playing a scary game of “Bloody Mary” in front of a mirror. It’s scary stuff, but it doesn’t happen in the film. A similar scene happens but with two completely different characters, and no ghostly ending.

‘Spider-Man’

This has got to be one of the most expensive cut scenes ever. The teaser trailer, which was never meant to be in the film, saw a bank heist ending with Spider-Man catching the escaping robbers’ helicopter in a web strung between the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

The trailer was pulled following 9/11 for obvious reasons. Watch it above.

‘Thor: The Dark World’

This shot of Loki in a fur coat is the Holy Grail for rabid Tom Hiddleston fans as it only appears briefly in one TV spot for Marvel’s super-sequel. It hasn’t been seen since in any of the film’s deleted scenes either. Maybe it was just too sassy to live?

‘Godzilla’ (1998)

This teaser trailer has to be a dig at the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise, which in 1998, was the biggest franchise on the planet. A group of school kids are looking at a T-Rex skeleton in a museum when Godzilla’s massive hoof stomps the bones into oblivion.

Unfortunately the final film didn’t quite match up to this display of chutzpah.
