TV is in the spotlight this month on Amazon Prime, with Hulu's buzzy drama Nine Perfect Strangers among the most exciting additions to the streaming service in August. There's also a summer treat for Star Trek fans with the arrival on the streaming platform of the second season of animated series Lower Decks.

On the movie front, there's an Indian war film, an American thriller and the latest instalment of the ever-expanding Neon Genesis Evangelion anime franchise.

New movies coming to Amazon Prime Video in August

Shershaah (12 August)

Originally scheduled for a release last year, Hindi-language war drama Shershaah is now set to premiere worldwide just a few days before India's Independence Day. The film tells the story of the decorated veteran Captain Vikram Batra's actions during the Kargil War of 1999 and takes its title from his nickname, which translates as "Lion King".

Boss Level (13 August)

Time loop stories are all the rage at the moment, with wedding day time-hopper Palm Springs arriving on Amazon Prime earlier this year to strong reviews. The latest example of the genre to hit the streamer is Boss Level, directed by The Grey and The A-Team helmer Joe Carnahan and finally showing up in the UK after multiple delays. Frank Grillo leads the cast as a special forces operative trying to escape a loop, with Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts and Michelle Yeoh also part of the ensemble.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time (13 August)

The incredibly successful Neon Genesis Evangelion series has spanned multiple media and various spin-offs and permutations since debuting as a manga in 1994. This latest feature-length tale currently stands as the highest-grossing entry in the series, continuing the story surrounding an apocalyptic war between aliens known as Angels and cyborgs piloted by human teenagers, known as Evangelions.

The three previous films in the Rebuild of Evangelion series will also be made available on the platform.

The Vault (27 August)

Set amid an ambitious heist at the heart of the Bank of Spain, this thriller from Spanish filmmaker Jaume Balagueró focuses on a group's attempt to reclaim treasure found by archaeologists but subsequently seized and concealed by the government. Game of Thromes alum Liam Cunningham is the organiser of the heist, with Freddie Highmore, Famke Janssen and Sam Riley some of the biggest names in the cast.

Cruel Summer (6 August)

Told from multiple perspectives across its episodes, this 10-part series follows a mystery tale over three summers in the 1990s. The story is built around the disappearance of a popular teenage girl and the subsequent social climb of another girl who was previously seen as an outsider. Harley Quinn Smith is among the cast for this one, which sounds like an interesting psychological thriller yarn.

Modern Love S2 (13 August)

This anthology series proved popular when its first run landed in 2019 and so it has been renewed for a second season. Based on a New York Times column, it examines stories of love in all of its shapes and forms. Among the stars set to appear this time around are Kit Harington of Game of Thrones fame, Bohemian Rhapsody and Sing Street standout Lucy Boynton and Judas and the Black Messiah breakout star Dominique Fishback.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (weekly from 13 August)

Known for his work as one of the main writers on cult hit Rick and Morty, Mike McMahan has since gone on to create animated comedy of his own with Solar Opposites. One of his other projects is the Star Trek animation Lower Decks, which is returning to Amazon with a second season of 10 episodes. The series keeps thing separate from the high glamour and drama of the main Star Trek properties, focusing on the crew working on the lower decks of Starfleet's least important vessel.

Nine Perfect Strangers (20 August, then weekly)

Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley joins forces with British scribe John Henry Butterworth for this mysterious miniseries, based on a bestselling 2018 novel by Liane Moriarty. As the title suggests, it brings together nine strangers at a secluded wellness resort which promises to transform all of their lives. It boasts a terrific cast, which includes Nicole Kidman, Regina Hall, Samara Weaving, Luke Evans, Michael Shannon and Melissa McCarthy.

Kevin Can F**k Himself (27 August)

All eight episodes of this comedy series are set to land in the UK at the end of the month, off the back of strong reviews in the States. Schitt's Creek star Annie Murphy portrays a character who is, quite literally, fighting against the idea of being a "stereotypical sitcom wife". The style of the show shifts between multi-camera sitcom brightness and the single-camera realism of more dramatic TV series. It's a smart concept which has real potential to shake up the conventions of a pretty tired genre.
