American Horror Story's Emma Roberts and Worlds of DC star Michael Shannon have teamed up for a freaky new movie.

Titled Abandoned, it's been reported by Deadline that production has already wrapped, whilst the story itself catches up with a mother, father and infant son as they relocate to a remote farmhouse.

As their new home's dark and tragic history surfaces, "the mother's fragility escalates to a state of psychosis that jeopardises her own safety and that of her newborn son".

Co-financier Vertical Entertainment's Peter Jarowey teased in a statement: "The screenplay is terrific, and Spencer [Squire, director] delivered an extremely frightening, yet relatable, feature brought to life by his incredible cast."

Roberts is an American Horror Story mainstay, having appeared in 2013's Coven, 2014's Freak Show, 2017's Cult, 2018's Apocalypse and 1984 a year later.

Twice nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category at the Oscars, Shannon's CV also includes The Shape of Water, Knives Out, Take Shelter and Nocturnal Animals.

Admitting he "tries not to say much", Shannon explained: "People think, 'Oh, you're in character or whatever.' It's like, 'No. I don't come here to talk. I just want to say what's written and go home.'

"I go into my little room in the trailer and I turn all the lights out and I just lay on the floor like a vampire. And then they knock. I'm like, 'Okay, I'll go.'
