American Horror Story star Billy Eichner is making history with his new gay romantic comedy.

The actor will both co-write and star in Universal movie BROS, which will be the first rom-com about gay men to be produced by a big studio. Billy will also be the first openly gay actor to write and star in his own major film.

BROS is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2022 and posting to Twitter on Friday (March 5), Billy celebrated the achievement.

"In shocking news, BROS will be the first rom com about gay men ever produced by a major studio and, apparently, I'm the first openly gay man to ever write and star in their own studio film," he wrote.

"Only took 100 years! THANKS HOLLYWOOD!!!"

Following the success of his popular series Billy on the Street, the actor has landed roles in Parks & Recreation, The Lion King and Bad Neighbours 2 and has appeared in numerous seasons of American Horror Story.

BROS will be directed by Forgetting Sarah Marshall filmmaker Nicholas Stoller, who co-wrote the screenplay with Billy. Judd Apatow will produce the film alongside Stoller, with Billy receiving an executive producer credit.

The announcement follows Billy previously revealing that options for openly gay actors in Hollywood are "limited".

"Perhaps we're not as marginalised, politically, or in the world at large and obviously things have gotten better but within our industry, although you're seeing more gay people on TV, and more gay characters, we're often used in such limited ways," he said last year.

"There is no gay Tom Hanks in this country. There is no gay Will Ferrell. There's no gay Steve Carell. There's no gay Paul Rudd. There's no gay Kevin Hart. There's no gay Will Smith. The list goes on and on, and that's not a coincidence.

"After a hundred years of making films, it's not a coincidence. It's not that they just haven't been able to find the right gay man, who has enough talent to have a career like that."

In other news, Eichner recently confirmed that he will not be returning for American Horror Story season 10.

BROS is scheduled for release in 2022.
