American Voters Support Bombing of Aladdin’s (Fictitious) Homeland

Perhaps Disney’s 1992 animated classic ‘Aladdin’ isn’t as well loved as we thought. Or maybe some people need to think a little harder before they tick a box.

A new poll of US voters conducted by Public Policy Policing found that a surprising amount of those polled were in favour of bombing Agrabah.

In case you can’t quite place it, Agrabah is the Arabic kingdom in which ‘Aladdin’ is set - and, rather more importantly, it doesn’t actually exist.

PPP found that 30% of Republican voters polled (532 in total) said they would support the action - and that the largest proportion of these were also those who said they would vote for Donald Trump (41% of his supporters).

PPP also asked the question to Democrat voters, of whom 19% were in favour.

It should of course be noted that the question - which was included toward the end of a lengthy poll - only offered participants three possible answers: ‘support,’ ‘oppose,’ or ‘not sure.’ In other words, they couldn’t respond, “Agrabah isn’t real.”

PPP communications specialist Justin Mayhew says the question was included in response to the heavy anti-Muslim sentiments being expressed by Republican candidates, most controversially Trump who has proposed barring all Muslims from the USA.

Mayhew tells MTV News, “If we asked this question outside the election you’d get slightly less enthusiasm because people aren’t familiar with that area.

“But anything that sounds Arab might make these [respondents] think of people who might associate with terrorism.

“It also relates to the fear people are feeling and it speaks to the fear that the right is playing to with their campaigns.

“There’s obviously been a lot of radical rhetoric about Islam and a lot of proposals about how to fight ISIS that involve carpet bombing, like Ted Cruz proposed, or overly aggressive tactics that might involve [civilian] causalities.”

The results of the poll can be read in full here.
