Ana de Armas's eagerly-anticipated Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde has announced that it won't be released until 2022.

The Knives Out actress was tapped to play the Hollywood icon in 2019, nine years after development on the now-Netflix movie – which was previously assumed to be coming out this year – began under writer-director Andrew Dominik (Mindhunter, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward).

According to Variety, Mulholland Drive's Naomi Watts and X-Men: Dark Phoenix star Jessica Chastain were considered for the role initially.

Based on Joyce Carol Oates' novel of the same name, Blonde depicts a somewhat fictionalised version of Marilyn's – or as she was known to begin with, Norma Jeane – rise to stardom.

Speaking to Collider about the drama back in 2016, Dominik explained that it has "very little dialogue in it" and said that it will tell "the story of every human being, but it's using a certain sense of association that we have with something very familiar, just through media exposure".

The Twilight Saga's Xavier Samuel, Sara Paxton (Good Girls), Fear the Walking Dead's Garret Dillahunt, Adrien Brody (The Pianist) and Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire) also star, while Mare of Easttown's Julianne Nicholson is set to play Norma Jeane's mother Gladys Pearl Baker.

A specific release date has yet to be confirmed.

Before she'll be seen as Marilyn Monroe, Armas will star as Paloma, a CIA agent, in long-awaited James Bond outing No Time to Die.
