Andrew Garfield always deserved better than the two sub-par ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films he was part of. For all the faults of those films, he was not one of them.

In a recent interview, the actor said portraying the iconic, wall-crawling superhero left him “heartbroken a little bit” when it became apparent certain elements were being prioritised over story and character.

Garfield discussed playing the part as part of Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ series, saying: “There’s something that happened with that experience for me where story and character were not actually top of the priority list, ultimately. And I found that really, really tricky.

“I signed up to serve the story and to serve this incredible character I’d been dressing as since I was 3. And then it gets compromised, and it breaks my heart. I got heartbroken a little bit.”

Garfield was a popular pick to portray the character, and his chemistry with the equally popular Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, was celebrated even when Marc Webb’s two films were not.

He had good things to say about his director however. “I’m loath to judge that experience and paint it as a whole. But there were great things about it. I got to work with incredible actors and a really great director.

“I was very young — 25, 26 — and I felt young. I’d only done a few films, and I was feeling in the right place. I felt guided into it, and I knew it was the right thing for me to do. I learned a lot about what feels good and what doesn’t feel good and what to say yes to.”

Since ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ in 2014, the character has been rebooted and folded into Marvel Studios’ Cinematic Universe, where Peter Parker and his alter ego is played by Tom Holland.

Holland made his debut as the character in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ earlier this year and will star in a solo film set for release next summer.

Garfield meanwhile has gone on to star in ’99 Homes’,’Hacksaw Ridge’ and most recently ‘Silence’ – Martin Scorsese’s awards season epic.
