Andy Serkis Talks Avengers: Age of Ultron Mo-Cap

Although Andy Serkis has a more human role in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ he also had a hand in bringing both The Hulk and Ultron to life. And now, he sheds some light on how the two will be brought to the big screen.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, the world-renowned motion-capture artist explained that The Imaginarium – his very own motion capture organisation – worked on both Ultron and The Hulk in the upcoming blockbuster.

“We did some work on Ultron,” he explained. “On the development of Ultron before James Spader came on board. In terms of movement styles: was he gonna be human-like? Was he gonna be robot-like? So we worked with a bunch of different people, from body-popping experts to dancers, to this guy called Neil who’s nearly eight feet tall…”

Was Serkis responsible for that eerie robotic shuffle we’ve seen countless times as we replay the ‘Age of Ultron’ trailer? We might have to wait until the Blu-ray extras until we find out.

As for Mark Ruffalo, it looks as though he had quite a session with Serkis and co and this could be our first hint that he will be voicing The Hulk himself this time around, replacing the classic voice of Lou Ferrigno.

“We gave Mark weights,” he explained. “We had voice projections so he could do his Hulk roar. On screen we could have a virtual representation of the low-res avatar of The Hulk, so he could come out and feel that sense of scale.”

Of course, Andy Serkis is one of the leading actors in the field of motion capture. And after his incredible work on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ shot him to fame, it’s been one incredible film after another. Most recently, his depiction of Caesar in ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ won over many an audience.

But it seems he’s just as happy working with actors behind the scenes…

“It’s a journey I end up going on with the actors,” he explained. “To find out what they want to get out of it, and what we can do to help them so it’s still them authoring the role. Initially when you’re asking them to put a grey suit on, they’re not very into the idea. But it’s usually within the first hour, when they can see the result of them being in that suit in real-time, they settle in. And then they’ve lost themselves in our world. James [Spader] in particular - he loved every minute of it.”

As for the results, we’ll have to wait and see. But with ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ heading to cinemas across the UK from 24 April 2015, it won’t be too long.
