Few expected the sequel to the much-maligned Angry Birds Movie to be better than the first movie, but this is the world we are living in now.

As it is, The Angry Birds Movie 2 is currently boasting the best ever Rotten Tomatoes score for a movie based on a video game.

It has a very respectable approval rating of 82 percent 'fresh', as of the time of writing, and while that is likely to change as more reviews come in (there are 28 so far), it's very good going indeed.

That's better even than the reasonably well-received Pokémon Detective Pikachu with Ryan Reynolds (which bagged a 68 percent approval rating).

The first movie was panned by critics in 2016, receiving a lowly 44 percent 'fresh' rating, the New York Times noting that 'the kids of today deserve better'.

The turnaround is pretty stunning, however, and while the verdict is still being mulled by the New York Times, Empire calls it 'breezy, colourful fun'.

The Guardian, meanwhile, hailed director Thurop Van Orman, saying: “[He] approaches this expanded universe with something of the visual ambition of Pixar's Brad Bird and a restless, playful spirit reminiscent of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films.”

Sure, a lot of the ‘fresh’ reviews are just three stars, but still, it’s a vast improvement.

The movie finds the Angry Birds from the hit mobile game to be just as angry as before, if not more so, as they are forced into an alliance with Pig Island to face a new foe.

With a pretty solid voice cast comprising Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, Awkwafina, Rachel Bloom and Bill Hader, it's out now across the UK.
