'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' star Anna Quayle dies aged 86

Anna Quayle, the actress famed for her role as Baroness Bomburst in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, has died aged 86.

The Stage, an acting industry publication, published her obituary yesterday writing that she died two months ago on 16 August.

It comes after Quayle was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2012.

As well as her role in the popular musical, Quayle starred as Mrs Monroe on Grange Hill from 1990 until 1994.

She also featured in A Hard Day's Night in a scene opposite John Lennon portraying Millie, a woman who recognises the star when he's undercover.

Quayle went on to have parts in 1967 film Casino Royale and 1981 series Brideshead Revisited.

She won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Musical Actress from her role in Stop the World - I Want to Get Off.

The actress' final credit was for Celia Spookfinder in an episode of the Adam's Family Tree television series in 1999.

RADA, the acting industry where Quayle trained from 1955 to 1956, shared a tribute to the actress on its Twitter page today.

A message read: "We are sad to hear of the death of Anna Quayle, who trained at RADA from 1955-56. Her wide-ranging career spanned TV, film and theatre, winning a Tony Award in 1963. She's remembered by many as Baroness Bomburst in the 1968 film of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

She married in 1976 to Donald Baker and had one daughter, Katy.
