Anthony Mackie thrilled about going 'toe to toe' with Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday
Anthony Mackie is excited about going up against Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming superhero movie Avengers: Doomsday.
The actor, who makes his film debut as the new Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, will reprise the role when he starts shooting the next Avengers team-up movie in March or April.
Little is known about the upcoming project except for the fact that Downey Jr., who previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man, will return to the MCU as a new character, the evil Doctor Doom.
In an interview with Deadline, Mackie shared that he can't wait to work with Downey Jr. in a new capacity after playing allies Iron Man and Sam Wilson/The Falcon in previous MCU films.
"RDJ made the big announcement that he's coming back. Other than him I don't know who of the original crew will be coming back, but I know he will be," he said. "I'm excited to be able to go to work with him, go toe to toe with him. That's a once-in-a-career experience that's as amazing as working with Harrison Ford, because he's a legend."
Mackie, who worked with Ford on Brave New World, insisted that he doesn't know which Avengers stars will appear in Doomsday and the follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars.
"I don't know how many are coming back," he continued. "I'm the OG now. I'm the only guy. I'm the Avenger from the old group that brings in the new group. So it'll be a changing of the guard."
He also shared that Doomsday will be filmed in London throughout this summer and Secret Wars will be shot the following summer.
Both movies will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed the previous Avengers film, Endgame, in 2019. During that film, Downey Jr.'s Iron Man was killed off and Chris Evans's Steve Rogers handed over the Captain America mantle to Mackie's Sam Wilson.
