Antoine Fuqua’s Western The Magnificent Seven is set to open the Toronto International Film Festival, and the director may soon be trading in cowboys for gangsters. Fuqua is currently in talks to direct a new take on Scarface for Universal.

Howard Hawks directed the original, Chicago-set Scarface in 1932, which was re-imagined by Brian De Palma in 1983, with a story set in the Miami drug trade that famously starred Al Pacino in the lead role of Tony Montana.

Straight Outta Compton scribe Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft of the project. Donnie Brasco screenwriter Paul Attanasio and Suicide Squad helmer David Ayer wrote previous versions of the script.

Bluegrass Films and Global Produce are behind the would-be third iteration of the film. Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark will act as producers, along with Marty Bregman, who produced the 1983 Scarface film.

Fuqua’s Magnificent Seven is a re-imaging of John Sturges’ 1960 western that starred Steve McQueen. Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington star in the film, which is set to hit theaters on Sept. 23.

Fuqua is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham.
