AO World revenues have soared by more than 50%, with the online retailer’s boss declaring the first half has been “like no other”.

The company, which sells fridges, TVs and laptops online, said sales in the six months to September 30 jumped 53.2% to £717 million.

It recorded a pre-tax profit of £18.3 million, compared to a £5.9 million loss a year earlier.

The FTSE 250 company, led by John Roberts, saw high demand for products online in a period that saw swathes of high street retailers have to close for Covid-19 lockdowns.

AO World said the electricals market has increasingly moved online as customers continue to choose this channel to make their purchases.

Roberts said: “This has been a half year like no other. I believe our market has changed as a result, forever. Online is now the dominant retail channel for customers and manufacturers alike.”

He added: "We have grown share across all categories and the results we're announcing today give huge confidence that our business is well set for the future to cement the changes.”
