Apocalypse Clown is the year's funniest comedy that you (probably) haven't seen, but you can rectify that now that it's landed on Netflix UK.

The madcap apocalypse outing follows a trio of failed clowns – Bobo (David Earl), Pepe (Fionn Foley) and Funzo (Natalie Palamides) – who think they've finally got their chance to delight the masses when a solar event leads to mass electrical blackouts.

Unfortunately for them, Bobo's nemesis The Great Alphonso (Ivan Kaye) also senses the same opportunity. Bobo also might be too distracted by reuniting with his one-time lover Jenny (Amy De Bhrún) to take advantage of the apocalypse.

But is it really an apocalypse going on? The truth is revealed in a hilarious final twist that ends Apocalypse Clown in the perfect way, so let's delve into it.

Major spoilers await if you haven't seen the movie yet.

Apocalypse Clown ending explained: What caused the blackouts?

It certainly seems that an apocalypse has happened when the clowns find themselves on deserted streets after a night in jail, following a bust-up with two vengeful human statues that Funzo angered.

Early on, the clowns come across burger van owner Gustavo who tells them of a "flash in the sky" before the electricity cut out. They even find themselves going past a power station on fire, which suggests something major has happened.

There is still one person broadcasting in the country (possibly even the world) though: Tim from former boyband duo BroManz. Alphonso senses his chance and kidnaps Jenny to go and see Tim, who he has a history with as Tim's brother died in a freak gunge tank accident on Alphonso's show in the '90s.

Tim promises Alphonso and Jenny that he knows the truth of what happened, but his transmitter can only reach up to 30 miles. Luckily, Alphonso's big top in Alphonso Land is still standing and could be used to broadcast to the country.

Alphonso isn't interested in getting the truth out there though; he just wants to broadcast his show again. It's all going well for Alphonso until Bobo, Pepe and Funzo show up at the big top and, eventually, manage to wrestle control of the broadcast transmitter away from Alphonso.

After Tim kicks Alphonso into the gunge tank in revenge for his brother (as, obviously, Alphonso did it), Jenny starts to transmit to the world... and it's all nonsense. Tim is a full-on conspiracy theorist, putting the event down to CIA experiments on the sun with a teenage Hilary Clinton, with lizard people planning to enslave humanity.

Unsurprisingly, the blackouts aren't because of that. As Jenny continues her ridiculous broadcast, everybody's phones start going off again and the movie cuts to a news report about what really happened.

It was all down to a massive power surge at the concert by country singer Garth Brooks, leading to "localised electrical blackouts" which probably came from that power station we see on fire earlier in the movie.

It was not so much an apocalypse, more a mild inconvenience, and it's a brilliantly silly final twist that ends Apocalypse Clown in the only way it could.
