Apollo Creed Could Return In Creed Sequel

Sylvester Stallone has revealed that a ‘Creed’ sequel is on the cards… and could bring back the fictional boxing legend, Apollo Creed.

During an interview with Variety, the 69-year-old ‘Rocky’ star explained how ‘Creed’ director Ryan Coogler might approach their planned sequel.

“Ryan [Coogler] has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together,” Stallone revealed. “Think of ‘The Godfather 2.’ That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.”

Of course ‘Creed’ hasn’t yet debuted here in the UK… and now there’s already talk of a sequel. But perhaps it was inevitable. After all, the return of Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa is something that’s bound to pull in a crowd.

And the studio couldn’t be happier.

“There’s no doubt that we’re making a ‘Creed 2,’” says MGM CEO Gary Barber.

According to Stallone, he’s already been developing the idea with director Ryan Coogler. One version of the upcoming sequel would take place in the past, which would give them the perfect opportunity to bring back Carl Weathers in the role of Apollo Creed.

“I can’t believe I got in the ring with him,” Stallone said about Weather. “Even if it was play fighting.”

Although Apollo Creed was killed off during a fight with Ivan Drago in ‘Rocky IV’, a ‘Creed’ prequel would be the perfect opportunity to revisit the relationship between Rocky and Apollo at the height of their friendship.

But they admit that another possible would be a straight sequel.

“You’ll have [Apollo’s son, Adonis] face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian,” said Stallone. “You can start to meld my experiences and then you start to bring different cultures into it. And you can see what’s happening with the Russians today in America. The complication will come with the girl’s ambition, because she’s not Adrian. She has places to go, things to see, the clock is running on her hearing.”

It certainly sounds as though a ‘Creed’ sequel has legs… but despite Ryan Coogler’s ideas entering the ring, it looks as though he might not be the man behind the camera.

“I know Ryan is probably going to be gone for a couple years,” explained Stallone. “So there will be a quandary on: Do we work with another director and have Ryan produce, or do we wait? There’s a diminishing time acceptance of a sequel. Now they are cranking them out in a year.”

Will Carl Weathers return as Apollo Creed?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But the fans would love to see one more fight with the Master of Disaster.

‘Creed’ heads to UK cinemas on 15 January 2016.
