James Wan has dished the dirt on his currently in-development Aquaman spin-off focused on The Trench.

Making quite a splash (pun sadly intended) in last year's Worlds of DC blockbuster, this nightmarish humanoid species were the thorn in Arthur Curry's side during some of his epic journey – but eventually kneeled to the Trident of Atlan in the film's mesmerising final battle.

In conversation with ComicBook recently, director Wan offered some hints as to what audiences can expect when the spin-off finally dives onto the big screen.

"We, you know, we're still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don't want to get into that too much," he explained.

"But definitely it's one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it's going to play more as a monster horror movie than it will as a superhero film, but it's still definitely part of the Aquaman world."

If you've seen Aquaman, then you'll know that The Trench are aquatic abominations primed to lead a horror story – think Jaws but with spiky limbs – so Wan's description is extremely promising for fans of the DC universe.

Whether or not the spin-off ties in with the Worlds of DC template is anyone's guess, but it'll be great to see Wan unleashed in the horror genre once again.

This is the mind that brought The Conjuring to the screen, after all.
