Arsenal target takes step closer to Premier League move as Fabrizio Romano drops hint over players future
Arsenal have done some great transfer dealings over the past few windows and Mikel Arteta already has his sights set on a bargain this summer.
The Gunners have improved tremendously over the past 12 months and they are expected to further strengthen their squad in the upcoming window.
While Arsenal are likely to spend in the summer, they will also be keen on striking a bargain or two for an out-of-contract player.
The 27-year-old is set to leave the German club at the end of the season and is now weighing up his options.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed the latest on the situation and provided a hint as to where the midfielder might end up next season.
“Mahmoud Dahoud will make a decision on his future club soon,” Romano explained on Twitter.
“Premier League clubs approached him over free deal and looks most likely destination — while there’s interest also from Serie A. Dahoud will leave Borussia Dortmund as free agent in the next weeks.”
With the Premier League looking like his most likely destination, Arsenal fans will be licking their lips. The German midfielder could be a tidy investment for Arteta’s side.
The 27-year-old has racked up over 100 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund but hasn’t played much this year.
His last start for the German club came back in March. This season he has only featured in nine league matches, with four of those being starts.
Other clubs are interested
Along with Arsenal, several other clubs from around Europe are also weighing up a move. A player like Dahoud on a free transfer was always likely to be in high demand.
Italian sides Roma, AC Milan and Napoli, are all interested in the midfielder. The likes of Leicester, Real Betis, Sevilla, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have also been linked.
From an Arsenal perspective, signing Dahoud on a free would then allow them to spend more money in other areas.
While Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka have been excellent for the majority of the season, they could do with added depth.
Arsenal are also wanting to strengthen their forward line this summer, which could prove costly.
They have recently been linked with the likes of Raphinha and Moussa Diaby, who would each demand a hefty price tag.
While Arteta’s side have done fantastic this season, they do lack the same depth as Man City. For example, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have played in every league match this season.
Arteta could do with more options next season, particularly with the added Champions League schedule. As this is the case, they are in the market for another creative outlet.
Both Raphinha and Diaby would be useful additions to Arteta’s side, but they would each cost in excess of £50million. With the Gunners set to splash the cash elsewhere, Dahoud could be a useful signing on a free.
