'Assassin's Creed' TV series is heading to Netflix

Iconic open-world stealth adventure game Assassin's Creed is coming to Netflix for a live-action TV series.

Though details are currently scarce, the streamer announced the project yesterday, in a tweet melding the insignia of the game's feted Assassin Order with the Netflix 'N'.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” say developer Ubisoft's Jason Altman.

“We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

The era and globe-trotting franchise's first game appeared in 2007, setting out the world of the centuries-old battle between a secret order of assassins and the Templars, during the Third Crusade, with stealth and secrecy just as key as fighting and weaponry.

It's spawed 21 other titles since, selling over 155 million units worldwide, with Assassin's Creed Valhalla, based in the world of the vikings invasion of Britain, due out later this year.

However, its initial salvo into the world of live-action was not a success.

Michael Fassbender starred in - and produced - the 2016 Assassin's Creed movie, an original story set during the Spanish Inquisition.

But poor reviews and a loss of $100 million at the box office resulted in the axe coming down on two planned sequels.

Luckily, Netflix has fared pretty well with its most recent video game adaptation – the Henry Cavill-fronted The Witcher.

While not set in quite the same world, there's a fantasy parity running between the two projects, with The Witcher having racked up a massive 76 million views for its first series.

In fact, it’s done so well, a prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is in the pipeline now too, as well as an animated spin-off movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
