James Cameron and his US production crew for Avatar 2 controversially touched down in Wellington, New Zealand last Sunday (June 7).

Shooting for the sci-fi sequel had been put on-hold since the coronavirus pandemic arrived, but now it's looking like things can continue once everyone's completed their mandatory quarantine time.

According to one government MP, David Seymour, this move is "an insult to working New Zealanders."

Via Stuff.com, it's been revealed that 56 film workers associated with Avatar 2 were granted access into the country, thanks to "special exceptions for overseas workers".

This is a big deal, considering 9 out of 10 requests for exemptions of this nature are rejected by the government.

"What are the rules at the border?" questioned Seymour. "At the moment, it seems that if you're a friend of the government, you're in business. If not, you're on your own.

"There should be one rule for everyone... It's unacceptable for politicians to be picking and choosing who can enter the country."

Accusing decision makers of "political favouritism", Seymour also went on to stress how horticulturalists, fishermen and education staff were desperate for similar exemptions.

Cameron and his crew might want to keep their heads down.

Avatar is now available to watch on services including Disney+ and Amazon Prime. Avatar 2 will be released on December 17, 2021 in US and UK cinemas, with Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 expected to follow in December 2023, December 2025 and December 2027 respectively.
