Avengers: Infinity War: Could Russo Brothers Take Over From Joss Whedon?

Although Joss Whedon is synonymous with The Avengers, it looks as though the franchise may be getting some new blood in the form of the Russo Brothers.

According to Badass Digest, the Russo Brothers – directors of the recent ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ – are in talks with Marvel to take over the ‘Avengers’ franchise.

“I’ve been told that the Russo Brothers are in talks to direct Avengers 3 and possibly 4,” they explain. “Sources tell me that they’re the favourites of Marvel right now and that they are the guys Kevin Feige wants to pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon.”

Of course, this would put the Russo Brothers in a rather important position – essentially leading the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And this is seemingly confirmed by the folks at Deadline Hollywood.

“The Russos are building up their Marvel cred with this all-star outing,” they say of ‘Civil War’. “I keep hearing they will step up to the ultimate Marvel all-star team and take the reins of ‘The Avengers’ franchise from Joss Whedon, possibly with that next film that will shoot back to back.”

This seems to be under the assumption that Joss Whedon doesn’t want to return to the franchise. After all, with ‘Avengers Assemble’ and ‘Age of Ultron’ under his belt, I can’t help thinking that he’d have first refusal when it comes to the Avengers franchise.

But if the rumours are true, it looks as though Joss Whedon may be leaving the Avengers behind… and with tension in the ranks, perhaps it’s a good time to get some fresh ideas in the think tank.

The other big questions remains – which Avengers will make it out of the other side of ‘Civil War’? For now, we’ll have to wait and see, but it seems they’ll be reporting to the Russo Brothers.

‘Avengers: Infinity War Part 1’ is expected in cinemas 4 May 2018.
