Avengers passes $1.5 billion, while Dark Knight trails with $1 billion

Avengers Assemble could beat Titanic into second place in the US domestic box office chart

'Avengers Assemble' has hit $1.5 billion (£945 million) at the worldwide box office.

It follows news that 'The Dark Knight Rises' has passed the $1 billion (£630 million) mark, but is still trailing behind the Marvel all-star superhero record-smasher.

It puts the Avengers in third place in the all-time highest-grossing films chart.

Number one and number two are occupied by James Cameron's 'Avatar', which made $2.8 billion (£1.7 billion) and 'Titanic' (£1.4 billion), but 'Avengers Assemble' is just $40 million away from taking 'Titanic's second place slot in the US domestic box office chart.

'The Dark Knight Rises' has so far not made the all-time top 10, but did make it to number nine in the US domestic all-time highest grossing films chart.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, 'The Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure' has clocked one of the worst three-day openings for a film of all time.

The film, which is aimed at the toddler market, made $207 per screen (£130) after being released over 2160 locations in the US.

It stars Toni Braxton, Christopher Lloyd and Chazz Palminteri, and is said to have cost $20 million to make, with another $40 million spent on promotion and marketing.
