The one major thorn in the side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been that the comic book label-turned-studio does not own the movie rights to a small portion of their best-loved characters.

However, since Marvel unexpectedly struck a deal with Sony to co-produce the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ fans everywhere have pursed their lips and wondered whether a similar deal could be made with 20th Century Fox, owners of the ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic Four.’

This is question often asked of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige – and, right now, his answer is definitively negative.

Asked by Variety about the likelihood of such a deal between Marvel and Fox, the producer responded, “It’s an impossibility at this juncture. We certainly have enough films to keep us busy for a number of lifetimes.”

Relations between Fox and Marvel have long been rumoured to be very uneasy indeed. Earlier attempts by Marvel to re-appropriate their characters have not worked out, aside from ‘Daredevil’ which Fox relinquished when their hold on the rights expired.

It has also been speculated in recent years that Marvel’s cancellation of their ‘Fantastic Four’ comic book and the deaths of characters Wolverine and Deadpool have been intended to undermine Fox’s films.

Even so, many figures from both the Fox and Marvel film franchises – among them Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman, and MCU directors the Russo Brothers – have expressed interest in seeing the two universes come together.

Doesn’t look like it’ll happen any time soon, though – but as Kevin Feige notes, it’s not as if comic book movie fans don’t still have a great deal more to look forward to in the years ahead.
