A stage adaptation of the cult classic film Back To The Future is set to open in the West End — with original film actor Christopher Lloyd helping launch the show by picking up a copy of the Evening Standard.

Back to the Future, The Musical will open at the Adelphi Theatre in The Strand on May 14 next year.

It originally opened at the Manchester Opera House in March to critical acclaim but shows were halted soon after due to the pandemic.

An advert for the show to announce its transfer was released today starring Lloyd, who played Dr Emmett “Doc” Brown in the movie, and two of the stage show’s stars — Roger Bart and Olly Dobson, who take the roles of Doc and Marty McFly respectively.

In the advert, a mystery man holds a copy of the Standard, with the front page headline: “Back To The Future Musical Begins Tonight.” Lloyd later reveals himself to Doc who, stunned, says: “Great Scott! It’s… you.” Lloyd replies: “Let’s keep it our little secret.”

The musical is based on the first film of the time-travelling movie trilogy, which was released in 1985, and went on to gross £279 million at the box office worldwide.

Michael J Fox starred as Marty, who accidentally travels back to 1955 in Doc’s souped-up DeLorean.

The West End show will feature music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award-winning Glen Ballard. It includes classic tunes from the soundtrack including The Power of Love and Johnny B Goode.

The show, which has been created by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, creators of the original trilogy and produced by Colin Ingram, who was behind Ghost — The Musical. It is directed by John Rando, who won a Tony Award for his work on musical Urinetown.

Lloyd, 81, who also starred in The Addams Family and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, said about the show coming to the West End: “I’m delighted that Back To The Future the Musical will be up and running in London in mid-May. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the show’s run in Manchester, so I’m excited to finally see it for myself.

“I’ve already heard some of the new songs and met many of the cast members, particularly Roger Bart who plays Doc, so I’m confident the stage version will be exactly what our fans have been hoping for. And, Great Scott, I can’t wait to hear Doc Brown sing!”

Gale said: “Bob Zemeckis and I are over the moon to finally be opening Back To The Future The Musical in the West End at the historic Adelphi Theatre, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience our show. I promise, everyone will be delighted with how we’ve translated the movie to the stage.”
