Yes, a third film in the ‘Bad Boys’ series is officially on, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence confirmed to return, and a new title and release date in place.

The action comedy sequel has been on the cards for some time at Sony, with Joe Carnahan (‘The Grey,’ ‘The A-Team’) replacing ‘Bad Boys’ and ‘Bad Boys II’s Michael Bay in the director’s chair. Carnahan is also thought to have penned the script, and Bay remains on board as producer.

Having initially been scheduled for February 2017, it was then moved to that June (where it would have faced off against Warner Bros’ ‘Wonder Woman’) – but now it is instead set to open on 12 January 2018.

And how’s this for an excellent choice of title: they’re calling it ‘Bad Boys For Life.’

We can hear the 2001 P Diddy hit playing over the trailer already.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and the late Don Simpson, 1995’s ‘Bad Boys’ was Michael Bay’s feature directorial debut, and a key film in relaunching Smith – still best known as the Fresh Prince at the time – as a bona fide movie star.

Its 2003 sequel, meanwhile, was equally hailed and lambasted as one of the most over-the-top action movies in Hollywood history. Collectively, the films took over $414 million at the global box office.

‘Bad Boys For Life’ will see Smith and Lawrence return as Miami cops Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, and it seems Sony are optimistic that the duo will remain a box office draw as - rather than waiting another decade this time - there are already plans for a fourth ‘Bad Boys’ film to follow.
