Action sequel Bad Boys for Life is no longer the highest-grossing film of 2020.

The Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-fronted blockbuster had held the record for much of the year, since its release in January, but has recently been overtaken by The Eight Hundred.

The Eight Hundred is a Chinese historical war epic, set during the second Sino-Japanese war, around the time of World War II.

The film’s box office takings total $425,633,208 (almost £335m), with the majority coming from its native China.

Bad Boys for Life, the second sequel to the beloved 1995 thriller Bad Boys, made nearly $425m (roughly £334m) at the global box office, amid positive reviews.

The third highest-grossing film of the year is Sonic the Hedgehog, which sits ahead of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi mindbender Tenet in fourth.

Rounding out the current top ten are Robert Downey Jr’s creature feature Dolittle, Harley Quinn spin-off Birds of Prey, Pixar’s Onward, Blumhouse horror The Invisible Man, Jack London adaptation The Call of the Wild and Disney’s live-action Mulan, which was released On Demand earlier this month.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has greatly impacted the year’s release schedule, with Tenet, the first major Western release since before lockdown, failing to meet pre-pandemic box office predictions.
