Barbie: Dua Lipa added to the cast of upcoming Margot Robbie film

International pop star Dua Lipa is adding another feather to her cap: she will reportedly be appearing in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film Barbie.

The film, which stars Australian actor Margot Robbie as the eponymous heroine Barbie, has been signed on alongside Little Women actor Saoirse Ronan.

This isn’t the singer’s first acting role. She cut her teeth in upcoming spy thriller Argylle, which was filmed in 2021 and is due to be released later this year.

The reports, which first appeared in The Sun, cap a busy few months for Lipa: alongside her acting work, she’s been busy performing in her Future Nostalgia tour, which kicked off in February in America and is now playing across Europe.

Though details of the script – and of Lipa’s upcoming role, though it’s rumoured to be a major one – have been kept secret, the film itself is reported to be about a doll who is kicked out of Barbieland for not being “perfect enough”.

The film, which has already generated a lot of hype, already boasts a star-studded cast, with Ryan Gosling said to be playing Barbie’s love interest Ken and Will Ferrell touted as the CEO of a global toy company.

Simu Liu, newly announced Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa and America Ferrera also make up the cast.

The film itself is being directed by Little Woman’s Greta Gerwig, who also wrote the script alongside Noah Baumbach. It is due for release in summer 2023, though the first stills from the film have already been released, showing Robbie as Barbie sitting inside her iconic pink Chevrolet.

Robbie, whose name has been attached to the film for a number of years, has previously said that it will be a very different project than the one people might be expecting.

“People immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is’, but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted,” she said.

“Now, can we truly honour the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”
