Despite reviews calling The Flash the best DC adaptation so far, we’re about to transition into James Gunn’s revamped DC Extended Universe - part of which will be Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Unveiled back in late January 2023, Gunn confirmed that this refresh of the DC Comics universe aims to provide a more unified approach, similar in nature to its Marvel rivals.

Some elements and characters featured in the company's old slate of projects will remain, while others will be completely rebooted and joined by brand-new characters, projects and stories.

It’s this final story that we’ll be delving into here; how will this new take on the familiar Dark Knight lore be different to what we've seen before? Who’s directing and starring and when can we expect to see it?

Following his success helming the concluding part of DC’s former cinematic universe, The Flash director Andy Muschietti was quickly snapped up by Gunn and his producing partner Peter Safran to helm their new take on Batman and Robin.

As first reported in Variety, Gunn explained: “We saw ‘The Flash’; even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan.

“It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes.

Gunn added: “They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

Is Batman: The Brave and the Bold part of the old DCU?

No. Batman: The Brave and the Bold will feature a brand new Bruce Wayne and Batman who will exist separately from both Ben Affleck’s Batman and Robert Pattinson’s caped crusader, as featured in The Batman.

The story will take its cues from the Batman & Son story arc from influential DC comic writer Grant Morrison, a series that Gunn has called “exceptionally influencial” on the character’s legacy.

Here, we find Bruce accompanied by his son Damien Wayne AKA Robin, with Gunn allowing Batman to spread his wings and explore the entire ‘Bat family.’

"Damian Wayne is my favourite Robin,” explained Gunn. “He's a little assassin who Batman tries to get in line and so this is the story of the two of them, and the beginning of sort of the Bat Family in the DCU."

The film will mark Robin’s first substantial live-action big-screen appearance since Chris O’Donnell last played the role in 1997’s Batman & Robin opposite George Clooney’s Dark Knight.

The movie doesn’t yet have a scriptwriter, so it’s unclear exactly what tone Batman: The Brave and the Bold might pursue.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold cast

With the DCEU busy prepping its latest trip to Gotham, there’s still no clear news on who might bring its inhabitants to life. Will it be an unknown newcomer or will Gunn transform the career of some familiar face just like he did with Chris Pratt’s Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy?

As the film’s production trudges on, we’re sure more details will begin to surface - but in the meantime, it hasn’t stopped the internet from making its own suggestions - from The Boys’ Jensen Ackles to Jamie Dornan as fan-made Bruce Wayne.

No stranger to social media, Gunn has so far been keen to squash many casting rumours. In fact, over on Threads, the filmmaker directly responded to one fan who enquired about recent whispers, going as far as to point out that the film's script hasn't even been written yet.

"I'm assuming rumors about DCU Batman casting have no truth to them?" asked on Threads user, to which Gunn replied: "I don't know what you're talking about but we don't even have a script, and there's a strike happening so, no, no casting."
