Batman V Superman Trailer: What We Learned

It’s official – the first teaser trailer for ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ has finally been unveiled. But what does it tell us? A lot more than you might think…

It’s no secret that Bruce Wayne is often referred to as The Dark Knight, and for good reason. But the first trailer for ‘Batman V Superman’ is a lot darker than even he might expect… and it seemingly takes our favourite DC heavyweights into far grittier territory. Introducing some altogether heavier themes, it’s quite a startling glimpse at the upcoming movie.

So what’s it all about? Let’s take a closer look…

A Controversial Superhero?

Before we’ve even seen a single image, the trailer opens with a rather ominous voiceover… and it seems that Superman has been subject to a bit of a media mauling.

“Is it really surprising that the most powerful man in the world should be a figure of controversy?” says one voice. “We are talking about an alien, whose very existence challenges our own sense of priority,” says another.

But what’s this all about?

It looks as though Superman has been busy since we last saw him in ‘Man of Steel’… but public perception isn’t exactly positive. And then a voice which sounds eerily similar to Jesse Eisenberg states that “human beings have a horrible track record of following people with great power.”

Could this be Lex Luthor’s motive? Perhaps… and it looks as though Bruce Wayne is right there alongside him.

Superman – Military Leader?

It’s one of the most striking images of the entire trailer – when Superman is practically worshipped by a military unit, adorned with symbolic Kryptonian shoulder patches.

It’s clearly a clever spin on the now iconic image from ‘Man of Steel’ – when Superman himself is being led into custody in handcuffs. But now the military seems to be on their knees in servitude. But what on earth is going on?

At this stage, we have no idea… but could Superman be in a position of great power?

In the opening scenes, we see a great statue has been carved in Superman’s image, and with mutterings about him being a guy trying to do the right thing, I have to wonder if ‘Batman V Superman’ will take inspiration from ‘Injustice’ – a comic book and videogame series which sees Superman take over as some kind of supreme ruler.

And perhaps that’s why Batman has a bee in his bonnet.

Batman Still Has Issues

It’s no secret that Batman isn’t exactly the most stable of superheroes… and his vigilante persona tends to be a bit extreme.

Well, it looks as though ‘Batman V Superman’ introduces a Bruce Wayne who is still struggling with his identity… and the voice of Alfred sums it up rather well.

“That’s how it starts,” he says. “The fever, the rage… the feeling of powerlessness – it turns good men cruel.”

And when we get a glimpse at Ben Affleck’s batsuit on the rack, it seems to be staring back at him, almost mocking him with its cruel grin. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the batsuit is looking almost Joker-like at this point.

What does it all mean? For now, we’ll have to wait and see…

But perhaps the classic Batman villain has left Bruce Wayne with some inner demons that he still hasn’t come to terms with.

Batman Shows Off His Firepower

It looks as though Batman has been given a bit of an upgrade… as he shows off some of his more advanced weapons and gadgets.

Of course, we get another shot of Ben Affleck in the batsuit. But while he’s looking pretty badass, it’s his awesome firepower that really piques our interest. After rumours that Bruce has invested in an army of drones, it looks as though he uses one of them to take on armed foes – or could that be a batplane?

Either way, it’s an interesting addition. But not quite as interesting as Batman’s awesome new power armour.

With glowing blue eyes and a steel cowl, it looks as though Batman has prepared himself for the inevitable fight against Superman. And that means a rather cool-looking Battle suit which looks like a far grittier version of Iron Man.

But will it prove to be effective against a super-powered foe?

Things You Might have Missed

Of course, there’s quite a lot to take in with this first ‘Batman V Superman’ trailer… but there are also some smaller touches that may go unnoticed, The first of which is a nod to an old foe.

During the atmospheric shot of Batman clutching an unknown object while peering into the distance, we see a familiar question mark emblazoned on a nearby pillar. Of course, this has to be a nod to The Riddler – last played on the big screen by Jim Carrey. But does this mean we may see Edward Nygma return?

But that’s not the only nod to the comics as Batman appears looking over the city…

It may look as though Batman is leaning up against some rooftop antennae, but a closer look at this image is a bit more revealing. Could that be a rifle Batman is holding? It’s something we rarely see – Batman wielding a civilian weapon. But in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ we see him do just that.

And this could be a good indication that we’re getting something far closer to Frank Miller’s comic books… at least, in that respect. And with the awesome firepower shown throughout the trailer, it seems he won’t be taking a non-lethal approach.
