A lawyer for the young person at the centre of the BBC presenter controversy has denied key claims.

The BBC confirmed it had suspended an unnamed male presenter over allegations that he paid more than £35,000 in exchange for explicit photos of a young person.

However, BBC News reports that a lawyer representing the young person at the heart of this matter has called claims made by the mother "rubbish" and disputes the original Sun article that sparked the scandal.

The lawyer for this young person claims a denial was issued to the Sun before the article's publication on Friday night, but that the "inappropriate article" was published anyway.

The lawyer went on to insist "nothing inappropriate or unlawful has taken place between our client and the BBC personality".

A spokesperson for The Sun has since responded: "We have reported a story about two very concerned parents who made a complaint to the BBC about the behaviour of a presenter and the welfare of their child.

"Their complaint was not acted upon by the BBC. We have seen evidence that supports their concerns. It's now for the BBC to properly investigate."

On Monday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed a meeting with the BBC over the allegations, but no formal police investigation into the matter is currently underway.

"Detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command met with representatives from the BBC on the morning of Monday 10 July," the Met's statement read. "The meeting took place virtually.

"They are assessing the information discussed at the meeting and further enquiries are taking place to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed.

"There is no investigation at this time."

Prior to the meeting, the BBC released a statement to announce it would be cooperating with police over “new information” that had come to light in the matter.
