From Tony Award-winning Broadway show to Hollywood musical, Dear Evan Hansen is the highly anticipated movie with Ben Platt reprising his role from stage to screen.
He plays the titular, an anxiety-ridden high school student. And with Platt being around 10 years out of high school, some people raised eyebrows at the casting choice.
In a now-deleted tweet following the release of the movie's trailer, the actor responded to the criticism about his casting, advising the "jerks" to go and watch Grease.
According to Variety, the tweet read: "thank u from the bottom of my [heart] for the outpouring of trailer love yesterday. the film required me to revisit areas of personal pain, so seeing ppl excited & moved makes it so deeply worth it. PS to the randos being jerks about age, read this great article and/or watch grease."
Platt isn't exactly the first actor to be cast out of their age bracket. And, as he said himself, you have to look no further than Grease where some of the actors who played the high school students were well in their 30s.
Still, it seems it is the music (and the fact that he played the part in the original musical, winning a Tony and a Grammy) that may have given Platt the edge over anyone else, with director Stephen Chbosky admitting he couldn't imagine anyone else playing the character.
"You just have to hear him sing the songs," he said. "His understanding of the character is so complete and so profound. I couldn't imagine anybody else playing it.
"It's his part. I felt very strongly about it. And to me it was never even a consideration."
Dear Evan Hansen will be released in cinemas on October 22 in the UK and on September 24 in the US.
