Benedict Wong Teases Doctor Strange Role

‘Doctor Strange’ actor Benedict Wong has teased details about his role.

During an interview with Den of Geek, the 44-year-old British actor hinted at a new direction for his character – ‘Doctor Strange’ sidekick, Wong.

“I’m certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant,” he said. “We’re heading in a different direction. He’s more of a drill sergeant.”

Of course, Wong has appeared in the Marvel comic books since ‘Strange Tales #110’ back in 1963… and while he has no magical abilities of his own, he’s a master martial artist. But this might not be the case when it comes to the movie.

“There isn’t any martial arts for Wong in Doctor Strange actually,” he explained. “He’s more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He’s one of the masters of sorcery.”

Kamar-Taj is a fictional small kingdom in the Himalayas… and judging from the recent trailer, it’s likely that this is where we find the Ancient one (played by Tilda Swinton).

But it looks as though she won’t be the only one teaching Doctor Strange.

It’s certainly a departure from the comic books… and sees Benedict Wong becoming more of a spiritual (and probably magical) mentor to Doctor Strange. Definitely not the manservant that Marvel fans will recognise.

But will Benedict be returning for any other Marvel movies?

“That would be nice!” he said… but it seems he’s unsure. “No, we’ll start off with the first one,” he added. “I’m just happy nearly completing in Doctor Strange. I’m very excited to see what happens.”

‘Doctor Strange’ heads to cinemas on 28 October 2016.
