Against all odds, Sansa Stark has made it to the final season of Game of Thrones. She started the series as a naive teenager with fairytale princess dreams, and over seven seasons we've seen her grow into a determined, clever survivor. It's high time for Sansa to play a major role in the fight for the living and the Iron Throne. Here are the best theories about what will happen to Sansa in Season Eight.
Sansa Will Take the Iron Throne
Sansa has had a brutal journey to the final season: Early on, she narrowly escaped a marriage to the repulsive Joffrey Baratheon and fled King's Landing before her marriage to Tyrion Lannister could be consummated. Then, she made the mistake of trusting Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish, who married her off to the abusive Ramsay Bolton. But she got her revenge when she had a hand in the deaths of both Ramsay and Littlefinger.
Now, as a fan on Reddit points out, she's got incredible support going into the final chapter.
After everything she went through, who has a stronger network of support than Sansa? She has Brienne sworn to protect her who is an absolute unit, Arya the faceless man, Jon who is one of the best fighters in the show now, the eyrie, knowledge from the 3 eyed raven, and the North who is loyal to the starks. Not only that but she is not in a position such as Jon or Dany where she would have a target on her back or be at immediate risk
So, could she be the underdog who ends up taking it all?
Daenerys and Sansa Hate Each Other
In the Season 8 trailer, we see Sansa finally meet Daenerys. "Winterfell is yours, your grace," Sansa tells Dany, looking not-at-all thrilled about it.
As Glamour points out, Sansa has reason to be skeptical of Daenerys:
Remember, the Targaryens burned Sansa’s grandfather and Uncle Brandon alive. Plus, Rhaegar Targaryen "kidnapped" Jon's mother, Lyanna Stark (Ned's sister and Sansa's aunt), which is what started the last war in the kingdoms. So, in other words, the Targareyens have done some serious damage to the North-Sansa's territory.
This might lead to a clash between Daenerys and Sansa for the Iron Throne. At least in the North, Sansa has more local support on her side, and might not take kindly to a foreign adversary walking in and taking control of Winterfell.
Daenerys and Sansa Team Up
This theory, based on the same early trailer, is inspired by Sansa's hairstyle. We know there's a significance to how Sansa styles her hair because, in 2017, she told Refinery29: "There’s always a pattern. It's never random.
“Sansa’s hair is constantly reflecting the people she’s learning from, or mimicking, or inspired by at the time,” Turner said. “When she’s Cersei’s prisoner, and she’s kind of absorbing all her manipulative techniques, it’s reflected in her hairstyle, and when she’s finding the spirit of Margaery in herself, she wears her hair like Margaery.”
In the trailer, Sansa's hair is pulled into tight braids that look inspired by Daenerys'. Could that mean she's drawing inspiration from the Mother of Dragons as they work together?
Sansa and Gendry End Up Together
This theory explains blacksmith Gendry's surprising reappearance in Season Seven. As one fan points out on Reddit, Ned Stark predicted in Season One that his daughter would end up with "someone strong, and wide, and brave"-all characteristics Gendry possesses, of course. Gendry is of noble birth, as the last living Baratheon. We know he gets along well with Sansa's sister, Arya. And, because he is a blacksmith with very valuable knowledge, he could play a heroic role in the final season as the White Walkers approach. It's a rare happy theory that provides a beautiful parallel between the strong Stark and Baratheon connection.
Sansa is Pregnant With Ramsay Bolton's Baby
Ugh, let's hope this theory isn't true. But it comes from this line Sansa says to Littlefinger about her wedding night to the psychotic rapist Ramsay: "I can still feel it. I don't mean 'in my tender heart it still pains me so' - I can still feel what he did in my body standing here right now."
This theory hinges on how much time has passed between Seasons 7 and 8. Ramsay died in Season 6, so Sansa's pregnancy would have shown in Season 7 unless the timeline has been more compressed than we realized.
Sansa and Arya Die
In the Season 8 trailer, Sansa, Jon, and Arya visit the crypts of Winterfell. Their graves are accompanied with statues-some fans think the sculptures of Sansa and Arya look like the characters at their current ages while Jon's looks older. The speculation is that it's a clue that Sansa and Arya will die in Season 8 while Jon goes on to live to the age he's represented in his statue.
Of course, it could, in Jon's case, just be an example of inaccurate artistic representation.
