Beverly Hills Cop 4 sets new Netflix record with huge debut

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has set a 2024 record for Netflix following its debut.

The long-awaited fourth movie in the Eddie Murphy series was released on the streamer last week – and has already proved hugely popular.

Axel F has taken in a massive 41 million views in its first few days of release, becoming the biggest debut of the year for Netflix ahead of previous record-holder Damsel's 35.3 million.

The Millie Bobby Brown fantasy ended up taking in 50.8 million in total for its first full week of release, but nevertheless Axel F has proven bigger when the first few days are taken into account.

The sequel sees Murphy return as cop Axel Foley, who re-teams with Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) when the life of his daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) is threatened.

The movie has received a largely positive response, currently sitting on 66% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, Murphy recently revealed why the fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie took so long to make following the third instalment in 1994.

"The reason why the movie didn't come together for years and years and years is because, in all the scripts that I read, there was no evolution," he told ScreenRant. "It was just, 'Axel's coming back now, and he's on a new mission.' It was like, 'Okay, now this has happened.'"

Admitting that "nothing worked", he explained: "Then once they added the element where Axel was married and he's not with his wife anymore, and they have a child and he's estranged from his child, and he's still in this job and all of his contemporaries are leaving...

"All he's got is his job, and he's got this horrible relationship. And the reason Axel's back in Beverly Hills on the surface is cops and robbers, but behind the scenes, it's really to reconcile with his daughter and all that stuff.

"Once we added that element, then we had a movie."
