Some of those watching the ceremony took to Twitter to air their disappointment at the singer, although others speculated that the sheer size of her voluminous dress had stopped her from getting to her feet.
@Beyonce You’re a joke for not standing up for Joaquin Phoenix. Understandable to make a statement. But that’s just poor sportsmanship for someone that actually deserved recognition. You’re entitled and arrogant. And as an actress you’re a joke. Smh. You ought to apologize to him

Joaquin pheonix did so much hard work for this movie he starved himself and risked all of that to be skinny to make this movie, Beyoncé should be proud and respectful to just kiss him on the cheek and call for him that's his first award she has many, atleast clap girl so childish

Just putting it out there. MAYBE Beyoncé didn’t stand during Joaquin Phoenix’s standing ovation because her dress was massive & would have been a pain to get out of her chair with and then gather it to sit down again.
Just a thought. Maybe it wasn’t a statement. #GoldenGlobes— Nicki Price (@nickiprice27) January 6, 2020
Beyonce herself had been nominated in the Best Original Song - Motion Picture category for her Lion King track but didn’t win, losing out to Rocketman’s (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again, Rocketman.
She was also criticised for turning up an hour late to the awards ceremony and then spending time posing on the red carpet with husband Jay Z.
Phoenix’s portrayal of the Joker involved playing him as a comedian with mental health issues whose life spiralled out of control after being treated poorly by society.

He was up against Christian Bale, Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce for his award, although Joker lost out to 1917 in both the Best Motion Picture and Best Director categories.
