What happened in Across The Spider-Verse?

Turns out, Spider-Man movies are a bit like busses: you wait ages for them to arrive, and then loads of great ones appear all at once.

While Tom Holland’s Peter Parker has been rounding up multi-verse foes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s live-action series, Morales has a multi-verse dilemma of his own – and it threatens everything he holds dear.

Fair warning: Across The Spider-Verse spoilers lurk below

In Spidey sequel Across The Spider-Verse, Morales' existence as Earth 1610’s primary Spider-Man becomes fairly complicated.

Following the destruction of the Alchemax multi-verse collider at the end of Into The Spider-Verse, Morales comes into contact with a scientist who was impacted by its explosion.

Going under the name the Spot, his body is covered in portals to new universes and he blames our hero for his current condition. As a result, he sets out to obtain energy from Alchemax colliders from other universes to increase his power.

Meanwhile, Earth-61’s Gwen Stacey AKA Spider-Woman is currently on the tail of the Spot alongside members of the Spider-Society – a super team featuring multiple Spider-Man variants from a range of different parallel universes. While tracking the Spot’s activities, their leader Miguel O'Hara (Isaac) tries to avoid causing ‘canon event’ risks that can threaten to unstable the entire spider-verse.

By the end of 2023’s Across The Spider-Verse, we leave Morales battling personal issues whilst trapped in an alternate dimension with the Spot on the cusp of delivering a deadly attack with far-reaching multi-verse consequences.

While little is currently known about the plot of Beyond The Spider-Verse, it’s a safe assumption that it’ll see Morales try to escape his incorrect Earth and save his father. However, in doing so, he risks causing one of those critical ‘canon events’ that the Spider-Verse works so hard to avoid.

“The multiverse provides us with these sort of sliding doors,” co-director Dos Santos recently told Variety.

“It allows us to ask these questions like the head games you play with yourself: ‘If I had done this, instead of that, what happens? How does my life turn out?’ You get to see those things play out on screen.”

Elsewhere, we’re sure this Spider-Man threequel will introduce us to even more Spider-Men while wrapping up what has become one of the most popular and well-received superhero trilogies of recent years.
