William 'Bill' S Preston Esq. and Theodore 'Ted' Logan will officially be facing the music in cinemas in the UK as an official release date has been announced for the upcoming comedy sequel Bill & Ted Face the Music.

The long-awaited third instalment in the franchise, starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter in the title roles, will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, September 23.

It's most excellent news for fans who have been waiting for official news of a release date after pandemic-related changes – and it also confirms that the movie won't be released on VOD at the same time, as is happening in the US.

"Get ready for the most excellent big screen experience with the ultimate dudes, Keanu Reeves and Alex @Winter!" the film's official account wrote, alongside a poster that declared the film would be released "only in cinemas".

The movie will re-introduce us to endearing slacker best buddies Bill (Winter) and Ted (Reeves), who set off on a new adventure when they're warned by a visitor from the future that they need to create a song in order to save all life as we know it.

They'll be getting some help from a new batch of historical figures and some music legends as well as their daughters Billie Logan (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea Preston (Samara Weaving), while William Sadler will reprise his role as Death too.

Bill & Ted creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon recently revealed a very odd coincidence they experienced while the first movie was in development, saying that they actually first laid eyes on their two future leads while in line at McDonald's.

"There are these two guys in front of us at McDonald's just goofing off and talking to each other," Solomon said. "And Chris and I are like, 'Now those should be the people that play Bill and Ted!'

"And then we ended up on set for the first rehearsal and it was Alex and Keanu [who were the same guys from McDonald's]. Unbelievable."

Bill & Ted Face the Music is due for release in cinemas in the UK on September 23. It will be released in cinemas and on VOD in the US on August 28.
