Bing Bong’s Original ‘Inside Out’ Exit Was Somehow Even More ‘Heart-Wrenching’

‘Inside Out’ was easily one of the most emotional films of the year. It didn’t matter if you were five, fifteen or fifty you inevitably ended up weeping uncontrollably during the Pixar adventure, specifically at one point in particular.

Just to clarify, there are imminent spoilers ahead. So if you’re one of the unlucky souls who hasn’t actually watched ‘Inside Out’ yet then not only should you be thoroughly ashamed but you shouldn’t read ahead.

Are they gone? Good. Obviously those of us who have seen ‘Inside Out’ know that the death of Bing Bong was one of the most heart breaking scenes in Pixar history.

But, according to Richard Kind, who voiced the cotton candy, cat, elephant, dolphin hybrid, Bing Bong’s original demise in the Memory Dump was even more heart breaking.

Kind explained to MTV, “When I first saw the movie, the scene down in the valley, where the memories have been lost and disposed of, was about 40 seconds to a minute longer. And I loved it. I actually talked to the producer’s daughter who agreed with me and said she didn’t like the shorter version as much.”

So with both Kind and the producer’s daughter on-board for the elongated version, why was it eventually trimmed down? Kind believes that it was too “heart-wrenching.”

The ‘A Serious Man’ actor continued, “The reason why they cut it – and I think they’re sort of right – was because that earlier version was heart-wrenching. It was absolutely heart breaking, and I likened it to the scene in ‘Bambi’ when his mother dies. We don’t need to see that again. I think we felt exactly what we needed to feel in that scene.”

But what was cut out of the final scene? Well, as his name suggests, the actor was kind enough to remember it for us.

“When he finally extends his hand and says ’I’ve got a good feeling about this,’ you had seen a lot more of him during that original scene so that when they’re trying and trying and trying to get back, you understand what he’s going through,” Kind explained. “You see him get a little desperate. It was a lot sadder.”

In fact, just even picturing Bing Bong’s final scene is enough to leave me emotionally exhausted all over again. Those of you who want to relive ‘Inside Out’ in all of its glory can now do so from the comfort of your own home, as it’s just been released on Blu-ray & DVD.
