Black Box ending spoilers follow.
Along with The Lie, trippy horror Black Box has launched Amazon Prime Video's Welcome to the Blumhouse collection of original genre movies.
The movie stars Mamoudou Athie (next to be seen in Jurassic World: Dominion) as Nolan who, after losing his wife and his memory in a car accident, undertakes an experimental treatment to restore his memories.
Once Nolan starts the treatment, which literally puts him in his memories for him to relive, he starts to question everything he thought he knew about himself, which leads to a sinister discovery.
But what's going on in Nolan's mind? We're about to go into some major spoilers, so look away now if you haven't seen Black Box yet.
The treatment sees Nolan enter his memories like some kind of immersive experience called the black box, using an imagined watch to move forward and back through the memories. However, each time he goes in, he doesn't see any faces (they're just blurs) and he also comes up against a creepy being that attacks him.
That would be bad enough, but Nolan soon enters a memory that takes place in an apartment he doesn't recognise. He tracks down this apartment and sees the woman from his memory, as well as getting some violent flashbacks of a man falling down the stairs.
Nolan's brother Gary has been investigating Nolan's medical history after his accident, and he discovers that after Nolan suffered "suspected brain death", he was taken to Dr Brooks where he miraculously woke up from his three-day coma.
In the next phase of Nolan's treatment, he attacks the creepy being and starts to see faces. However, the woman he sees isn't his dead wife and he realises they're not his memories at all – they're the memories of Dr Brooks' dead son Thomas.
Thomas wakes up in Nolan's body and his mother tells Thomas that after he fell down the stairs, he was brought to the hospital. During their attempts to save his life, they took an EEG and Dr Brooks downloaded his data, waiting for the right person to "upload your consciousness into".
That turned out to be Nolan when he was braindead following the car accident and Dr Brooks put Thomas's consciousness into Nolan. She was waiting for Thomas to fully remember, but he never did, so she made sure he came back for the experimental treatment to "fully remember".
For a time, it works and Thomas is 'alive' again, only in Nolan's body. He drops Nolan's daughter Ava off with Gary, and goes to visit his wife Miranda and his daughter Ashley, convincing them that he really is Thomas (even though he looks like Nolan).
The problem, though, is that Thomas was abusive to Miranda before his death and when he discovers that Miranda essentially "erased" him from their life in the apartment, he starts getting abusive again. Miranda knocks him out and he wakes up in front of Gary and Ava before racing back to Dr Brooks.
She believes that the creepy being in his mind is trying to "protect" him and took him to where he last felt safe. The consciousness transplant will only work if he goes back into the black box and kills it, only for Thomas to discover that the being is really Nolan – and he's not fully gone.
In Nolan's mind, Thomas is about to kill Nolan once and for all, but Gary and Ava arrive at Dr Brooks's office in time to distract him (he can still hear them when he's in the black box, naturally).
Thomas remembers that he attacked his daughter, leading to Miranda knocking him down the stairs, so he stops himself killing Nolan. He leaves the 'safe room' in the black box, against his mother's wishes, and is seemingly left in an endless void to live with what he did in real life. Dark.
Dr Brooks tries to bring Thomas back, but it's Nolan who is back in his own body when the black box is removed. Dr Brooks is struck off as a result of her immoral treatment and Nolan goes back to his life with Ava. It's a happy ending... or almost.
The final moments of Black Box see Dr Brooks fiddling with the black box treatment at home and reviving Thomas's consciousness from a back-up file, seemingly determined to try out her treatment again to bring her son back to her.
Black Box is available to watch now on Amazon Prime Video.
