Black Panther Director Says Marvel Film Will Be His Most Personal

Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed director set to helm Marvel’s upcoming ‘Black Panther’ film, has revealed the project will be his “most personal movie to date”.

The film is still a couple of years away from release, but the cast is already shaping up with Michael B Jordan and Lupita Nyong'o signed up to star alongside Chadwick Boseman as the eponymous hero.

Speaking to Fast Company, the director of 'Creed’ and 'Fruitvale Station’ said: “It’s going to be my most personal movie to date, which is crazy to say, but it’s completely the case.”

Coogler says he is “obsessed” with the character - the king of an advanced, fictional nation called Wakanda, who is bestowed with the powers and duties of a warrior figure central to his culture.

“I think [the film] is going to be very unique, and still fit into the overall narrative that [Marvel is] establishing,” he said.

“I grew up as a comic book fan, and the same things used to happen in the comic books. You’d have Wolverine’s books, and they’d be so much darker and more brutal than the X-Men books, but they’d still fit in when you open the pages of the X-Men book. It’s new to movies, but it’s not new to storytelling.”

Boseman debuted as T'Challa and his costumed alter ego in 'Captain America: Civil War’ drawing plaudits for his performance and proving a popular addition to Marvel Studios’ ever-expanding cinematic universe.

It’s likely that Boseman will appear in 2018’s 'Avengers: Infinity War Part 1’ before his solo movie later that year.

With a cast including Boseman, Nyong'o, Jordan and possibly Andy Serkis (who played Black Panther villain Ulysses Klaue in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’) and with Coogler at the helm, 'Black Panther’ is undoubtedly one of the most exciting prospects on Marvel’s current slate.

The film is currently set for release on 6 July 2018.
