The full advert featuring Matthew Broderick's iconic '80s character Ferris Bueller has launched online five days early.

The video, titled 'Matthew's Day Off', includes dozens of references to John Hughes's 1986 classic comedy 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'.

Take a look at the video:

Promoting Honda's new CR-V car, the advert keeps the same theme from the classic movie — a 'day off' and re-sues Yello's classic track 'Oh Yeah'. This time Broderick pulls a sickie from work, rather than school, and rides around town in his new motor.

A teaser for the ad was released last week, leading some (optimistic) fans to speculate that it was in anticipation of a 'Ferris Bueller' sequel.

The fact it finished by flashing up '5/2/2012' - the top date in the American Football calendar - made cannier observers realise it was an advert.

On Friday site Jalopnik confirmed it, revealing that Ferris Bueller was plugging the new Honda.

The element of surprise gone, the car company reacted by releasing the ad in its entirety early to get some online and social media buzz.

It's certainly worked as it's had more than 3.4 million views on YouTube already. Reaction has been generally positive - the footage has more than 16,000 'likes', compared to '1,600' dislikes.

A commercial spot during the Super Bowl is one of the most expensive pieces of television real estate going.

A 30 second slot typically costs around $3.5million (£2.2million).
