Our verdict on The Sweeney trailer

Classic 70s cop show 'The Sweeney' is getting a big screen makeover this year and the first trailer has just hit the web.

A British film rather than a glitzy Hollywood production, the film stars Ray Winstone as Gruff Cop and Ben Drew A.K.A. Plan B (which is his full name) as Yoof Cop. Together they literally fight crime, breaking noses and rules along the way in the manor of detectives with under-lying mental problems.

As long as they get under the skin of their posh-o bosses though, then who really cares?

The original series starred Dennis Waterman and John Thaw as George Carter and Jack Regan. It set the bar for other cop shows like 'The Professionals' and was the clear inspiration for the more recent series 'Life on Mars'.

Nick Love, who directed the Danny Dyer-starring 'Football Factory', the Danny Dyer-starring 'The Business' and the Danny Dyer-starring 'Outlaw' is behind the camera for the film, which was first announced in 2008 and does not star Danny Dyer.

Before it entered production last year, names like Ewan McGregor, Daniel Craig and Tom Hardy were rumoured to be interested before it was announced that pop star Plan B was cast - presumably for artistic reasons.

The trailer has a recognisable name, a recognisable actor and utilises a quote from the show's pilot to fool people into thinking they're similar. What else is there? A car chase that was the basis of an episode of 'Top Gear', an impossibly barren Trafalgar Square and a glimpse of that guy who's famous for being in 'Homeland' now.

Finally, let's break the film down based on the trailer: Two detectives are from LANDAHN, they are renegades, someone at some point will say how they don't go "by the rulebook", a man with a posher accent than the main characters will find this annoying, some bad guys have their faces broken.

The end.
