'Blonde' viewers so disgusted by Netflix film that they're turning off after 20 minutes

Blonde viewers have been sharing their overwhelming disgust at the film about Marilyn Monroe, with many saying they had to turn off after just 20 minutes.

The Netflix film directed by Andrew Dominik is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, a fictionalised account of Monroe's trauma-filled life, and has already seen Ana de Armas who plays Monroe tipped for an Oscar.

But while viewers agreed that de Armas' performance was outstanding, they were mostly united on one other opinion - that the film is unwatchable.

Dominik has included many of the most harrowing moments of the Hollywood star's personal life in graphic detail, including being the victim of abuse, violence, rape and being forced into an abortion.

Many of those streaming Blonde, which dropped on Netflix on Wednesday, felt that the inclusion of a rape scene just 20 minutes in to the nearly three-hour film was so gratuitous and offensive that they could not continue to watch.

One person tweeted: "Tried to watch @netflix Blonde. Couldn’t stomach more than about 20 minutes of the nearly 3 hours length. That 20 minutes was nothing but cruel and heartbreaking. Absolutely unwatchable."

Someone else added: "I’ve been watching Blonde for 20 minutes and I’m sick to my stomach."

Another viewer agreed: "Not even 20 minutes into Blonde & I’m about to shut it off. It is. Awful."

One other viewer wrote: "Started Blonde and turned it off in record time. Graphically showing rape on screen is not in any way a meaningful way to portray the horrors of sexual assault. Please, i’m begging you leave this woman alone and quit slapping SA survivors and women in the face."

Viewers voiced their anger at director Dominik for the portrayal, with one person tweeting: "just watched #Blonde ... it puts norma/marilyn in a box that only allows to her be abused, sexualized, or call people daddy. extremely strange. maybe we stop letting misogynistic men try to make groundbreaking films about women- of which they know nothing about."

Someone else commented: "Can we all make a collective agreement to leave Marilyn Monroe alone from now on? She was hounded in life & now hounded in death. I really wanted to respect #Blonde but honestly, acting aside, the whole thing made me feel ill & uncomfortable. Maybe I'm missing something #Netflix"

Most of those watching agreed that de Armas had done an impressive job as Monroe, but felt that she had been let down by the film as a whole.

One viewer tweeted: "I’m watching #Blonde and I have to say I hope someone is checking in on Ana de Armas and making sure she is okay. Marilyn was exploited and this movie seems to be just more of the same."

Someone else wrote: "I’ve watched #Blonde. It’s one of the most misogynist films I’ve ever seen. Not a film about misogyny but a misogynist film. I could weep for Ana de Armas - who was superb - playing in such a vile and exploitative mess. She and MM deserve so much better."
