Yahoo Movies BMW, Fiat Chrysler hit with recall troubles
Tesla isn’t the only automaker making headlines this week for technical misfires. BMW is expanding a 2017 recall over possible engine fires. The expansion adds 185,000 vehicles to the recall effort, bringing the total number of affected autos to 925,000.
The BMW models included in the recall are the Z4, as well as models from the 3 and 5 series. The German carmaker is also recalling 360,000 vehicles in China as part of a worldwide effort to get defective Takata airbags off the road.
Drivers are encouraged to check the Airbag Recall site to find out if their vehicles are affected by the widespread recall. Anyone who has a car with a Takata airbag will have to get a replacement, but they will be provided free of charge.
Fiat Chrysler’s rolling recall
Fiat Chrysler is another automaker in the hot seat this week. The company has been recalling its Dodge Dart sedans from model years 2013 through 2016 due to a gear problem that can lead to vehicles rolling even if the driver has put the car in park.
The recall so far has included 300,000 Darts. Fiat Chrysler will begin alerting owners about affected vehicles at the end of May.
Industry-wide, U.S. car sales were down 10% in the first quarter of 2019, with total auto sales down 3%. The more significant U.S. drop suggests that higher tax burdens may be dampening consumer demand.
